dash with left upturn

Dash with left upturn

68/94

Use a Unicode input method to enter ⹃; don't substitute a swung dash. In old Slavonic writing, it marks a pause or closes a reading unit. A 2004 Znamenny chant example uses it between lyric blocks, echoing manuscript punctuation.

What ⹃ means

Use your editor’s Unicode input command to enter ⹃.

A technical encoding proposal from 2013–2014 describes digitized manuscript editions that used private-use fonts or ad hoc code pages for Slavonic marks. Text from those editions may need the original font or character remapping to retain the intended mark across systems.

Preceding punctuation stays separate from ⹃. Font spacing can make a middle dot, colon, or three-dot mark followed by it look like one designed unit, but the sequence is not a ligature.

What does ⹃ mean in Slavonic writing?

It marks a pause or closes a section of text.

In Cyrillic Ustav manuscripts—a formal handwritten style—it can mark a full or medium pause, or a section ending. 11th-century examples include the Ostromir Gospel and Sava’s Book at reading-unit or heading endings, and the Glagolitic Psalterium Sinaiticum at Psalm-verse endings.

Early printed Slavonic books stylize its shape. A 2004 Znamenny chant example—a system for notating liturgical singing—places it between lyric blocks, echoing manuscript punctuation.

Is ⹃ a paragraphos or a swung dash?

It has a paragraphos role in some Slavonic texts, but is a distinct mark.

The Greek paragraphos ⸏ is usually drawn as a horizontal line under the opening letters of a line; ⹃ sits raised within the text.

The swung dash ⁓ appears as a fallback in some reproductions when the dedicated character was unavailable. It is separate from ⹃, and both marks can occur in the same Slavonic text.

Specialist punctuation in Slavonic manuscript and chant contexts; elsewhere it reads as an unfamiliar mark.

Don't replace it with ⁓ just because both look dash-like.

In a 2004 Znamenny example, this three-dot sequence divides lyric blocks.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⹃ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Supplemental Punctuation block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
