Tetragram for Stove

50/87

𝌱 names the “stove” figure in the Tai Xuan Jing, an ancient Chinese divination text—not a picture of a kitchen stove. Its chapter links the hearth with fuel, cooking, feasting, household order, and an extinguished fire. In ordinary chat, it reads as a specialist reference, so ask for context.

What 𝌱 means

It names the “stove” figure in a Chinese divination book.

Han scholar Yang Xiong composed the Tai Xuan Jing, drawing on the older Yijing, a Chinese divination classic. Its first draft was complete in 2 BCE; Fan Wang reorganized the surviving text during the Jin dynasty.

For divination, readers selected a figure and consulted its appraisals—short judgments about a situation. Under 灶, the stove image moves from low fuel and borrowed food to cooking and feasting, then to an extinguished fire.

Someone sent me 𝌱—what are they saying?

Alone, it points to a specialist source, not a clear everyday message.

A reader of the Tai Xuan Jing can recognize a named divination figure; outside that context, the shape gives little clue to “stove.” The tetragrams are less familiar and less widely used than Yijing hexagrams, so add a few words when sending it or ask the sender what they mean.

Why does 𝌱 have four lines?

Its four lines encode a pattern, not a drawing of kitchen gear.

The Tai Xuan gives each of four positions three states: solid, broken once, or broken twice, making 81 signs. Yijing hexagrams use six lines with two states; the systems share a divination lineage but are not interchangeable.

Later readers have interpreted the work through the Five Phases (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water), Confucian virtues, or political satire. These are readings of the larger book, not extra meanings built into this one sign.

Historical and specialist; it reads like a source-text reference, not an everyday cooking message.

“Stove” names the figure’s chapter image, not a literal kitchen picture.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𝌱 an emoji?

No. In Unicode 17.0.0 it has no emoji presentation; its appearance comes from the font used by the app.

Why does 𝌱 show as a box?

If your device or app’s font lacks the glyph, it may appear as a box; that is a display gap, not another meaning. A font with Tai Xuan Jing coverage can render it.
