tetragram for greatness

Tetragram for Greatness

51/87

𝌲 is the Taixuan tetragram named “Greatness,” one figure in Yang Xiong’s Chinese divination system related to the I Ching. It marks a place in that system, not a general compliment. The Taixuan’s first draft was completed around 2 BCE; its earliest surviving text is a Jin dynasty redaction.

What 𝌲 means

It names one Taixuan tetragram, not a free-standing praise mark.

It is a figure made from stacked lines whose title is translated as “Greatness.” It belongs to Yang Xiong’s Taixuan, a Chinese divination system, rather than acting as a general sign of praise.

Yang Xiong made the Taixuan, also called the Canon of Supreme Mystery, to supplement the Yijing (I Ching, or Book of Changes). A 2021 study describes its lines as solid, split once, or split twice, read from top to bottom. Fan Wang’s later redaction placed the appraisals beside their tetragrams, establishing the standard format.

Is this an I Ching symbol?

It belongs to a related system, but it is not a Yijing hexagram.

The Taixuan was designed in relation to the Yijing: the Yijing uses solid or broken lines, while the Taixuan adds a third line state. Scholars differ on whether the work chiefly explores cosmology, Confucian ethics, or political satire; modern readers also approach it philosophically. “Greatness” names a place in this system, not a universal mood.

What does this symbol mean in a message?

Usually, it signals specialist notation, not casual praise.

The Unicode proposal describes this set as classical semantic and divinatory notation and names Chinese classicists and linguists as its user community. A knowledgeable sender may be pointing to the Taixuan; without that context, treat the glyph as a niche reference or ask what it means before reading it as praise.

Scholarly and specialized; opaque in ordinary chat.

Do not read it as a generic “you’re great” reaction.
