What ๐ซต means
It points at the reader and says "you". The other pointing hands aim up, down or to the side; this one aims straight out of the screen, at the person holding the phone. Senders use it to single someone out without typing their name: "this is you", "it was you", "you, yes you". It is drawn fingertip-first, as if the finger were coming at you, though the exact artwork differs between platforms. It comes in a default colour, usually yellow, and five skin tones.
The pose is older than the emoji. Pointing at a passer-by was the trick of two famous recruiting posters: Britain's 1914 Lord Kitchener image with "Your country needs YOU" and the 1917 American Uncle Sam poster with "I Want You". Both were designed so that each person walking past feels personally addressed, and the emoji does much the same in a chat.
Is ๐ซต an insult or a compliment?
Neither on its own; the words around it decide. After a compliment it is praise: "the reason this group chat is fun ๐ซต". After a complaint the same finger is blame: "you always do this ๐ซต". Repeated (๐ซต๐ซต๐ซต) it usually just adds emphasis. With a laughing emoji it usually means "you're the joke", which is friendly roasting between people who know each other.
A common public use is a caption that describes a type of person and ends in the finger: "people who reply with just 'k' ๐ซต". It points at every reader who recognises themselves, so it usually teases a crowd rather than attacking one person. Sent bare to a friend it is a nudge ("look at this", "this one is about you"); sent to a stranger or a manager, the pointed finger can feel like a jab, because in many places pointing at people is considered impolite.
Playful and direct between friends; it turns confrontational the moment the receiver is not in on the joke.
To a boss or a stranger it reads as an accusation, not a friendly reminder.

4Worth knowing
- It is the only emoji hand that points at the viewer. It arrived in 2021 in the same batch as the melting face and heart hands .
- The Uncle Sam poster artist, James Montgomery Flagg, used his own face, aged up, as the model, because hiring one would have cost money.
Questions people ask
2Why does ๐ซต show as a box or blank square?
Because the app, font or system doesn't support it. The emoji dates from 2021, so software not updated since then often has no picture for it; updating usually fixes it. The sender may see it fine, or the same box.
Can I send ๐ซต to my boss?
Better not. It lands as blame or a call-out rather than a reminder. Use to point at a task or a link instead.
