What ₸ means
It stands for Kazakhstan’s national currency, the tenge. The symbol was chosen in 2007 through a nationwide competition organized by the National Bank of Kazakhstan. Its design pairs a capital letter T with an upper horizontal bar floating above it, evoking the initial T sound in “tenge” while symbolizing stability and progress.
In Kazakhstani retail displays and receipts, the sign is normally placed after the amount separated by a space (for example, 2 500 ₸). In some software or foreign currency lists, placement depends on the user’s local language settings, while interbank transfers use the standard three-letter code KZT.
Standard for retail prices, store displays, menus, and business reporting.
As of 12.12.2024, Kazakhstan's National Bank advises using the full name or KZT in official documents.

3Worth knowing
- The name “tenge” shares historical roots with words for scales and coins, including the medieval term that gave Russian its word for money, «деньги» (den'gi).
- Around 30,000 design submissions were entered in the National Bank’s 2007 competition to choose the symbol.
Questions people ask
2Should ₸ go before or after the number?
After the number. In Kazakhstan, prices are written with a space followed by the symbol (such as 1 500 ₸), though English formats may vary.
Can I use ₸ in formal legal contracts?
It is safer to use KZT. The National Bank of Kazakhstan recommends spelling out the word “tenge” or using the ISO code KZT in formal documentation.
