What ʧ means
Use an IPA keyboard or the HTML reference ʧ. A keyboard layout for phonetic transcription inserts ʧ directly; in HTML, the decimal character reference is ʧ.
Some fields accept only ordinary characters. There, use tʃ as two letters, or t͡ʃ when your transcription uses a tie bar to mark one affricate.
What sound does ʧ represent?
The voiceless “ch” sound in “chip.” The sound starts with a brief stop and opens into a hiss. That stop-then-friction pattern is called an affricate.
ʧ is a single tesh ligature built from the stop t and the hiss-like IPA letter ʃ (esh). Transcriptions also write it as tʃ; a tie bar in t͡ʃ can make the one-unit reading explicit.
The IPA’s 1928 chart grouped ʧ with affricate ligatures; its 2026 chart lists the ligature as superseded by the separate symbols t and ʃ.
Why does ʧ look wrong in my document?
The font may lack IPA coverage. A fallback font can draw the glyph differently or show an empty box. Choose a font that includes phonetic symbols for reliable display.
A missing glyph changes what you see, not the character stored in the text.
Technical and specialist: it appears in phonetics, pronunciation guides, and linguistic notes.
Its one-piece shape can be a notation choice; use the ligature only when the transcription convention calls for it.

tʃ Two separate characters for the same broad sound; ʧ is one ligature.
Questions people ask
2ʧ vs tʃ
Not always. Both can represent the same broad sound, but ʧ is one ligature and tʃ is two separate characters. A tie bar in t͡ʃ marks the parts as one affricate.
IPA font ʧ not displaying
It is usually a font-coverage issue. Choose a font with phonetic symbols; a fallback font may draw the glyph differently or omit it.
