What ₕ means
Use a Unicode picker or input method that supports the subscript h. The exact steps depend on your device.
A rich-text editor can style ordinary h as a subscript, but that formatting is not the same stored character in plain text. For longer technical expressions, an editor's subscript control or notation markup such as TeX can be more practical.
What does ₕ mean in linguistics?
Its meaning depends on the notation system. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet, a system used in Uralic-language phonetic transcription, subscripts can mark co-articulation: a sound shaped together with a neighboring sound.
Subscript and superscript letters also appear in phonetic writing and in scholarship that reconstructs earlier forms of languages; their position carries a technical convention, not ordinary prose meaning. The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet was first published in 1901; later Unicode proposals addressed how specialist subscript forms could be represented as separate characters. Outside a named notation, don't assume ₕ has one fixed meaning or pronunciation.
Technical and specialist; alone in a casual message, ₕ can look like an unexplained typographic fragment.
