What 𐙸 means
A332 is a catalogue label, not a confirmed reading. It identifies an entry in a modern Linear A sign list; it does not tell you what sound or word the sign represented. The sign’s reading remains unsettled as of 2026.
Linear A appears on clay tablets, small clay roundels (disks), and sealings (impressions left by seals) used in economic record-keeping. The script also appears on stone, metal, and vessels in cultic (ritual) and utilitarian (practical) settings. That tells us what kind of writing this was, not what A332 means.
Where did A332 come from?
Linear A’s earliest secure evidence is from Middle Minoan IIA, a phase of Bronze Age Crete placed in the late 19th century BCE under the high chronology, one scholarly dating scheme. That dates the script, not A332. A332’s own first appearance has not been established as of 2026.
In a 2016 study, Tzachili and Karnava treat two examples from Ayia Triada differently: one belongs to a sequence read as syllables; the other sits beside the number seven and is treated as a logogram, a sign for a whole word or counted item. The GORILA catalogue of Linear A inscriptions classifies HT 97b as a logogram, while the study’s authors argue for a syllabic use. They also propose that a sign on a lamp base from Akrotiri, from before the eruption that buried the settlement, might be A332 rotated sideways; they call that identification doubtful.
Linear A developed alongside Cretan Hieroglyphic. Later, Linear B adapted many of its signs for Mycenaean Greek, an early form of Greek. The Cypro-Minoan scripts used on Cyprus are also commonly linked to the Aegean writing tradition, but a similar-looking sign by itself does not prove a direct connection to A332.
In modern use, A332 signals discussion of Linear A; it is an inventory label, not a readable Minoan word.
Treat a proposed syllable or word as a hypothesis, not an established translation.

Worth knowing
- A and AB are scholarly catalogue prefixes, not sounds: AB marks signs attested in both Linear A and Linear B, while A marks entries attested only in Linear A.
