Linear A Sign A355

144/341

𐚏 is a Linear A sign with no secure reading or translation. As of 2026, Linear A remains undeciphered. In modern messages, it works as a script sample or specialist reference, so explain the context if you use it. A 2025 proposal suggests A355 may be a variant of another Linear A sign.

What 𐚏 means

As of 2026, no secure reading or translation is established.

Linear A combines signs for syllables with signs for things and fractions. A355 is a modern catalogue label based on the GORILA sign index, not an ancient self-name.

A 2025 study of sign shapes suggests that the only known A355 occurrence, on PH 10 (a tablet from Phaistos in Crete), may be a written variant of Linear A sign AB 23, 𐘕. The proposal is a hypothesis, not a settled identification.

Why was Linear A written?

It recorded accounts and marked offerings.

Linear A appears on Crete and nearby Aegean islands from around 1700–1450 BCE. The earliest recognizable inscriptions are assigned to MM IIA–B, stages of the Middle Minoan period, and are first concentrated at Phaistos. Clay tablets, small clay discs, and clay seal impressions record economic transactions; stone, metal, and vessel inscriptions show uses beyond the archive.

Cretan Hieroglyphic is earlier, but its relationship to Linear A remains disputed. Linear B later adapted much of the Linear A system to write an early form of Greek.

What does 𐚏 mean when someone sends it?

Assume a script sample or historical reference.

If the sender expects you to read it, ask for a transcription or context; this sign alone does not settle its sound or place in a word.

It reads as a specialist reference to ancient writing, not as an everyday chat symbol.

Don't call it “the Minoan word for…”; no secure reading is established.
