What 𐚕 means

A361 is a catalogue label, not an ancient word. It identifies the sign in modern scholarship but does not preserve a pronunciation. The sign’s role in a particular inscription cannot be read from its outline alone.

GORILA A361 points to the modern scholarly inventory used to identify this shape. The catalogue lets researchers refer to the same sign; it does not give the sign an ancient name.

What was Linear A used for?

It served administration and ritual life. Clay tablets, small round clay pieces called roundels, and clay impressions made with seals record economic transactions in palace systems. Stone and metal objects and painted vessels also show ritual or practical uses.

The debated earliest evidence for writing on Crete, marks on seals found at Archanes, is dated to the end of the third or beginning of the second millennium BCE. Scholars debate whether those marks are Linear A, an earlier script, or Cretan Hieroglyphic, though most classify them as Cretan Hieroglyphic. Linear A’s earliest attestation is placed in Middle Minoan IIA, an archaeological period; the script existed by the end of the nineteenth century BCE.

Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphic overlapped, but their relationship is debated. Linear B, used to write Mycenaean Greek, later adapted much of Linear A’s graphic repertoire. That historical link does not give 𐚕 a Linear B reading.

Specialist reference; in ordinary chat, it reads as a mark from ancient Cretan writing.

Do not treat A361 as a deciphered word or assign it a definite sound.

Why does 𐚕 show as a box?

The selected font cannot draw Linear A. The character is still present; switch to a font that includes the script.

Can Linear B tell me what 𐚕 says?

No. Linear B was used to write Mycenaean Greek and adapted much of Linear A’s graphic repertoire, but that relationship does not assign this sign a reading.
