Linear A Sign A612

270/341

𐜍 is a Linear A sign; A612 is its modern catalogue label, not a deciphered word. Linear A appears in Cretan records and in ritual and practical inscriptions, but its language remains undeciphered, so this sign has no secure ancient reading.

What 𐜍 means

No secure ancient reading is known. A612 is a modern number in GORILA, a scholarly catalogue of Linear A signs, not the sign's ancient name. Because Linear A remains undeciphered, this glyph has no confirmed sound or word.

Linear A grew from local Cretan writing practices and is attested from the 18th to 14th centuries BCE. Its earliest examples cluster around Phaistos before the script appears more widely across Crete and the Aegean.

What did Linear A do?

Mostly administration, with ritual and practical inscriptions too. Cretan authorities already used sealings—clay impressions made by pressing a seal into soft clay—to control objects. Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphic appear as two scripts in this broader record-keeping world.

Clay tablets, small round clay pieces called roundels, and sealings carry administrative records. Other examples on stone, metal, and vessels appear in ritual or practical settings. These contexts show where A612 could occur, not what it meant on its own.

Did Linear B come from Linear A?

Linear B developed from Linear A, but that does not decode A612. Cretan Hieroglyphic existed partly alongside Linear A. Linear B later adapted the script for writing an early form of Greek. Cypro-Minoan was another undeciphered Bronze Age script; the later Cypriot syllabary is related to Linear B and Cypro-Minoan.

As Linear B took over administration, Linear A survived only sporadically; its last surviving example is dated around 1350 BCE. That marks a change in where the script appears, not a new meaning for an individual sign.

A scholarly sign from ancient inscriptions and modern catalogues; without that context, its intended reading is opaque.

Do not present A612 as an ancient word or confirmed sound.

Questions people ask

Why does 𐜍 appear as a box?

The font or app lacks a Linear A glyph, so fallback may show an empty box. That display problem does not change the character in the text.
