linear a sign ab024

Linear A Sign AB024

24/341

As of 2026-10-08, the language written in Linear A remains undeciphered, so AB 24 has no secure word translation; “ne” is a conventional reading label. The sign belongs to Bronze Age Cretan writing used in palace records and on ritual objects. In a message, the safe read is a reference to Linear A, not a settled chat word.

What 𐘗 means

It is a sign label, not a translated Minoan word. AB 24 is a catalogue label. Some scholarship assigns it the sound value “ne”—a proposed reading, not the translation of a Minoan word.

Its outline has been compared with a vessel, but resemblance alone cannot establish what a sign meant in an inscription.

Its history shows scribal and regional variants

The earliest specifically identified example of AB 24 appears on the Phaistos Linear A document PH 7a.3, from Middle Minoan IIB (MM IIB), a period within Crete’s Bronze Age.

A sign in Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan writing system, is catalogued as CH 052 and described as a spouting jug. Scholars compare it with AB 24; that possible connection between sign traditions does not prove that either sign means “jug.”

AB 24 appears in simple and elaborate forms. The elaborate form has counterparts among Linear B variants, and regional forms are associated with Arkhanes and Zakros. These shape differences show scribal and regional variation, not a proven change in meaning.

What should I read into 𐘗 in a message?

Treat it as a reference to the script unless context says otherwise. Sent alone, it is safest to read as a niche reference to Linear A, Minoan writing, archaeology, or typography, or as decoration. If someone expects a translation, ask for the inscription or surrounding signs.

An epigrapher may use AB 24/ne to discuss the sign or its possible sound, but a general reader cannot infer a translated word from that label.

Unicode identifies the character, while the font supplies its visible outline. A missing-glyph box means the font could not draw 𐘗, not that the inscription contains another sign.

Specialist and archaeological; in ordinary chat it needs context.

Don’t turn the proposed “ne” or the jug comparison into a translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐘗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
