Linear A Sign A616

274/341

A616 is a catalog label for a Linear A sign, not a securely translated Minoan word. Linear A appears in Bronze Age records and ritual inscriptions around Crete and the Aegean, but those settings do not decode this sign. If someone sends 𐜑 alone, ask what they mean: it may point to the script, a source, or the glyph’s shape.

What 𐜑 means

It has no securely established translation. A616 is a modern catalog identifier for a Linear A sign, not a decoded Minoan word. As of 2026-09-14, A616’s first surviving attestation had not been securely dated, and the language written in Linear A had not been deciphered as a whole.

Linear A is a Bronze Age writing system attested on Crete and elsewhere in the Aegean from roughly the 18th to 14th centuries BCE. That span dates the script, not A616’s first surviving example.

The last reported trace of Linear A dates to around 1350 BCE. Linear B later became the script of palace accounting; that shift belongs to the script’s history, not a documented change in A616’s value.

What was Linear A used for?

It served both administration and ritual writing. Clay tablets recorded institutional business such as goods and personnel; other inscriptions appear on objects dedicated as offerings and in sanctuaries. A text’s setting helps identify its documentary role, but does not reveal what A616 means.

Linear A is generally regarded as a Cretan creation. Linear B later reused many of its sign shapes, and scholars have proposed correspondences between Linear A signs and shapes in Cretan Hieroglyphic, another script used on Crete. These script-level links do not establish a sound or word value for A616.

What does A616’s structure tell us?

Sign lists analyze it as a composite of A302 and AB060. The glyphs 𐙖 (A302) and 𐘴 (AB060) are catalogued as its components. This is a structural analysis of the sign, not a two-word translation.

Some signs used in both Linear A and Linear B are thought to have represented similar sounds, but that does not establish how A616 was pronounced. Its component labels alone are not a pronunciation guide.

Scholarly and archival; in casual chat, ask what the sender means.

Don’t present A616 as a translated Minoan word.
