What 𐜏 means

Use Unicode input in an app with a font that supports Linear A.

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type 1070F, then press AltX. In GTK-style input, press CtrlShiftU, type 1070f, then press Enter.

𐜏 is its own encoded character. The Unicode chart lists 𐙖 (A302) and 𐘭 (AB053) as component forms for this complex-sign entry; putting them in sequence gives two characters, not A614.

What does 𐜏 mean?

Its ancient sound and meaning are not securely known.

A614 is a scholarly inventory label, not a translation or pronunciation. As of 2026, scholars have not deciphered Linear A. Its texts include accounts of goods; repeated inscriptions on offering tables and objects from ritual or burial contexts point to religious uses of the script, not to a securely decoded reading for this sign.

When did Linear A first appear?

It appears in Middle Minoan Crete.

The earliest attestation is placed in the Middle Minoan IIA period, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. Linear A is described as a local Cretan creation.

Across the 18th–14th centuries BCE, it appears on Crete, Aegean islands, mainland Greece, and the western coast of Asia Minor. Cretan Hieroglyphic, an earlier writing system used on Crete, overlapped with it; Linear B later drew heavily on Linear A’s graphic repertoire. These are links between scripts, not translations of A614.

Scholarly and archival; A-number labels catalogue signs rather than serving as everyday prose.

A614 names the catalogue entry; it does not give the sign’s ancient pronunciation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐜏 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Linear A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
