What 𐝓 means
No secure reading or numerical value is agreed. As of 2026, one reference list treats it as a syllable sign—a mark for a spoken syllable—while a reading of HT 6a, a clay account of goods, treats it as a fraction sign.
The tablet records amounts, but that context does not reveal the exact fraction.
How Did Linear A Develop in Crete?
It probably developed locally on Crete. It is attested at Phaistos, a Cretan site, by the First Palace period, an early palace era (19th–18th centuries BC). Linear A was used in palace accounts and appears on ritual offerings. It overlapped with Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script (18th–17th centuries BC). Linear B later adapted Linear A for the Greek used in Mycenaean palaces and took over administration (15th–13th centuries BC).

1Why does 𐝓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
