linear a sign ab007

Linear A sign AB007

7/341

𐘆 has no securely known standalone translation: scholars conventionally transliterate it as di by comparing it with Linear B. It served as a syllabic sign in Linear A inscriptions from Bronze Age Crete. Its surviving stroke patterns vary, and a different-looking manuscript form does not automatically mean a different sign.

What 𐘆 means

It has no securely known standalone translation. Scholars conventionally transliterate AB 07 as di by comparing it with the corresponding Linear B sign; that is a reading label, not an English gloss or recovered Minoan word. As of 2026, Linear A has no generally accepted decipherment, so a general reader can identify it as the AB007 sign while researchers may use di when discussing a text.

Linear A was used on Minoan Crete and nearby islands. It served record-keeping, including clay tablets that tracked goods, and also appears in inscriptions generally understood as religious. AB 07 is treated as a syllabic sign: it contributed a syllable within a written sequence.

How is AB007 connected to Linear B?

Linear B later reused much of Linear A’s graphic repertoire. The two are related writing systems, but Linear B was adapted to write Mycenaean Greek. Shared sign forms do not prove that Linear A recorded Greek or that its signs carry the same meaning in both scripts.

Scholars place Linear A’s earliest attestation in Middle Minoan IIA, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE under the high chronology, an earlier dating framework for Minoan periods. Linear A coexisted with Cretan Hieroglyphic. AB 07 is recorded with one-stroke, multi-stroke, and grape-shaped forms; differences can reflect a scribe’s hand or site, and stroke count alone is not a reliable date stamp.

Specialist and epigraphic by register; it belongs in discussions of Linear A inscriptions.

Di is a scholarly transliteration, not a translated Minoan word.

Questions people ask

2

Why do AB 07 manuscript forms differ?

Because scribes used different forms. AB 07 is recorded with one-stroke, multi-stroke, and grape-shaped variants; a change in strokes alone does not establish a different sign or a later date.

Will every font show 𐘆?

No. A font without Linear A coverage may show a missing-glyph box or fallback instead of the intended character.
