Linear A Sign AB022F

20/341

𐘓 (AB022F) is conventionally glossed as the Linear A she-goat sign, but that gloss is not a securely translated Minoan word. Linear A served for records and ritual texts in Bronze Age Crete. In a message, read this as an ancient-script sign, not a clear everyday label for a goat.

What 𐘓 means

Best gloss: she-goat; secure translation: no.

AB022F belongs to a goat-sign set: AB022 is the general goat sign, with AB022F marked female and AB022M male; Linear B has a corresponding female-goat ideogram. That supports an animal classification, not a solved Minoan word. Linear A remains undeciphered, and the sign’s phonetic use is uncertain.

Linear A’s earliest attestation is placed in Middle Minoan IIA, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. It appears to be a Cretan development alongside Cretan Hieroglyphic, though their relationship is debated. That date belongs to the script, not to this individual sign.

Records and rituals both survive

Clay tablets record the movement of goods; stone libation tables, used for ritual offerings, and cult or burial objects carry repeated formulas. The surviving evidence shows administrative and ritual uses for Linear A, but not a sign-specific setting for 𐘓.

After Linear B appeared, Linear A ceased to serve as an accounting script. A later trace is a painted offering figurine from Poros Herakleiou in Crete, around 1350 BCE. Linear B borrowed much of its graphic repertoire from Linear A and has a corresponding female-goat ideogram; the scripts are connected, but their signs are not interchangeable.

Should I read it as a goat in a message?

Usually, no: read it as a script sign.

Without context, 𐘓 is best read as a Linear A specimen, not a message that plainly means goat. The she-goat gloss identifies the ancient sign; it does not make the character an everyday animal label. If the sender means the animal, the surrounding words should make that clear.

A historical script character; opaque in ordinary chat.

Do not rely on it when you need goat to be clear immediately.
