linear b ideogram vessel b209

Linear B Ideogram Vessel B209

𐃨 is a Linear B ideogram, one of the picture-signs Mycenaean scribes pressed into clay tablets. It is conventionally read as an amphora, a tall two-handled storage jar, marking a vessel or a counted unit; in one Knossos series it tallies jars of honey for the gods. The amphora label is handy but inexact, since the tablets carry more pot-signs than this one.

What 𐃨 means

It records an amphora or storage jar in palace accounts. Linear B is the earliest surviving form of written Greek, scratched on clay tablets by Mycenaean administrators; its ideograms are picture-signs for what was counted. Scholars tag this sign 209 VAS or AMPHORA, a catalogue label, not a guaranteed match to one pot shape. Specialists see the tag; everyone else sees a vase sketch.

No one designed this sign. Linear B grew out of Linear A, the older Cretan script scribes had already used for clay bookkeeping, and carried the ideogram habit into writing Mycenaean Greek. The surviving tablets fall broadly in 1450–1150 BCE, so the origin story is an evolving Aegean tradition, not one inventor's design.

Its closest kin are the other numbered Linear B vessel signs and, behind them, the older Linear A tradition; a look-alike Linear A sign would not automatically carry this one's Greek reading, since that language is still unidentified.

What does it mean when someone sends 𐃨?

Usually a Linear B reference, not a container reaction.

On the tablets, the marks around it do the real work: a commodity name specifies the contents, a spelled-out supplement names the vessel, and 𐃨 itself can be the counted unit. In one Knossos series it tallies honey entries sent to divinities.

Away from script talk it has no settled texting meaning: as of 2026 no established conversational reading exists; a caption naming Linear B, Knossos, or Pylos points to the Bronze Age sign, a lone 𐃨 likelier a font test than a message. Never confuse it with 🏺, the modern emoji jar.

Specialist and archival; outside a Linear B discussion it reads as a reference needing context.

Do not read it as 🏺: that loses the sign's Linear B identity.

Worth knowing

  • Linear B went unread for five decades after the tablets surfaced; Michael Ventris announced its decipherment as Greek in 1952.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𐃨 appear as a box?

A font problem. The character exists, but the active font still needs a Linear B outline; switch fonts before judging its shape.

Was 𐃨 one exact kind of pot?

Not necessarily. Amphora is the conventional tag for a two-handled jar, but the tablets classify a wider, fuzzier range of vessel shapes.
