Lycian Letter P

20/29

𐊓 is the Lycian alphabet’s p letter, used to write the /p/ sound rather than to convey a standalone modern symbol meaning. The script was adapted from a Greek alphabetic model for Lycian in ancient Anatolia and survives mainly in inscriptions, coins, and other objects. In a modern message, it reads as an ancient-script or typography reference; a missing glyph can make it appear as a box.

What 𐊓 means

It stands for the /p/ sound in the Lycian alphabet. Lycian was the language of ancient Lycia, a coastal region of Anatolia in what is now southwest Turkey; 𐊓 contributed the consonant p to its words, and still does in scholarly transliteration. It is not a pictogram or an emoji-style reaction.

The oldest dated Lycian writing is a pair of short graffiti catalogued as N300a and N300b, from the sixth and seventh centuries BCE, though their proposed Rhodian origin is disputed. Most surviving texts come from the fifth and fourth centuries BCE.

Is 𐊓 the same as Greek Pi?

No — adapted from a Greek model, but 𐊓 is its own character. Lycian writers reworked that model: they reused some signs and reshaped others for sounds Greek lacked, and some scholars think it reached them through the Greek island of Rhodes rather than being invented in one stroke. A few signs with no Greek source are also discussed alongside the Lydian and Carian alphabets of ancient Anatolia.

The Lycian script’s working life was carved in stone: tomb inscriptions and burial instructions, dedications, public monuments and coins. Bilingual texts — above all an inscribed stone slab from the city of Xanthos carrying Lycian, Greek and Aramaic versions — let scholars recover the language. As written Lycian gave way to Greek, 𐊓 went from everyday letter to specialist character.

Best in a Lycian transcription, ancient-script comparison, or typography note; in ordinary chat it signals a niche historical reference.

If it appears as a box, your font lacks Lycian coverage; that is a display problem, not a different letter.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐊓 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
