What 𝋨 means
One bar for five, with three dots.
An early bar-and-dot eight appears on Zapotec Stela 12, an inscribed upright stone at Monte Albán in Oaxaca (500–300 BCE). Maya and Zapotec scribes shared this notation for centuries; Maya numerals chiefly calculated and recorded calendar time. Some Maya dates also showed numbers as deity portraits, tying timekeeping to sacred imagery.
Why does position matter?
A digit's place can multiply its value.
In traditional Maya vertical place value, each higher position usually carries twenty times the value below. The Long Count, a Maya calendar for long spans, makes its tun a 360-day unit (18 20 days). Unicode encodes each value as one character, so ordinary text does not arrange the stack automatically.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𝋨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
