What 𝋲 means
It means eighteen: three bars plus three dots. Each bar counts five, and each dot one. The Maya Long Count (a calendar that counts days) mostly groups places by twenty; its tun is eighteen 20-day units called uinals, or 360 days.
The bar-and-dot system crossed cultures
A La Blanca figurine from 750–650 BCE carries dots that may be numerical marks, but that reading is uncertain. A Maya mural fragment from San Bartolo, Guatemala, dated ca. 300–200 BCE, records 7 in bar-and-dot numerals as part of a calendar date—one of the earliest clear examples. From ca. 600 BCE–900 CE, related numerals appear among Maya and Zapotec scribes and the Isthmian tradition, another Mesoamerican writing tradition. In 2026, some small publications in Guatemala and Yucatán still use Mayan numerals for page numbers.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𝋲 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
