What ∡ means
It marks an angle’s measure. In ∡ABC = 60°, ABC names the angle at B between sides BA and BC; the equation gives its measure as 60 degrees.
An angle arc appears by the middle of the twelfth century in a Latin translation of Savasorda’s geometry book. Pierre Hérigone used < for angles in his 1634 math textbook, Cursus mathematicus; William Oughtred reshaped it into ∠ in Trigonometria (1657), to distinguish it from “less than.”
As of 2026, some German-speaking regions and Poland use the same arc-with-dot mark in diagrams to indicate a right angle.

1Why does ∡ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
