Modifier Letter Capital P

63/128

ᴾ is a raised P used in specialist phonetic transcription, especially the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA). In UPA, a superscript can mark a very short sound, a transition vowel, or a brief schwa, so ᴾ has no universal sound value. It is an encoded character, not just a visual superscript effect.

What ᴾ means

It is a superscript P in specialist phonetic notation. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), superscript P marks a very short sound; superscripting can also mark a transition vowel or a brief schwa. Its exact reading depends on the notation, so ᴾ is not a universal sound label.

UPA's history is traced to 1901, with later revisions in the 1970s. A Unicode proposal cites an example of this raised P in 1986 material. That example belongs to a longer tradition of writing Uralic languages with fine phonetic distinctions.

UPA began in European Uralic-language research and later appeared in wider linguistic and archaeological work. It draws on Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic letter shapes, but its conventions differ from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a separate system for writing speech sounds. In 2002, a Unicode proposal argued that these distinctions need to survive plain-text exchange.

Why does ᴾ look like styled text?

Because it is a character, not a formatting instruction. Unicode lists ordinary capital P as its compatibility equivalent, but the two remain distinct encoded characters. A font still controls the exact shape and spacing.

A document's superscript command can raise ordinary P, but it styles that letter rather than entering ᴾ. For transcription, enter U1D3E through a Unicode-aware input method; in HTML, use ᴾ.

Technical and specialist: it belongs in phonetic transcription, not casual emphasis.

Its sound value depends on the transcription system; ᴾ has no universal reading.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᴾ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
