What ᵖ means
It marks a brief p-like element; the notation supplies the exact reading.
In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), superscript letters mark very short sounds, so ᵖ can record a fleeting p-like sound or transition. Its precise role depends on the transcription system and placement. UPA uses some modifier letters also found in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), but shared letters do not guarantee shared conventions.
The UPA proposal's examples include a sample from 1901 and point to a raised-p example in Itkonen's 1958 work. The proposal describes ᵖ as a precise plain-text form for Uralic linguistic data and records its use in related linguistic work.
How should I type ᵖ?
In Julia, type \^p and press Tab.
The Julia manual documents \^p followed by Tab for ᵖ. In other editors, use an input method that supports the character; applying superscript formatting to an ordinary p changes its appearance, not its character.
Specialist phonetic notation; the exact role of the raised letter depends on the system and its placement.
Formatted p is not the same character; ᵖ can carry notation meaning.
