What ₚ means
Its reading depends on the notation. The subscript p in phonetic notation is a marked form used in UPA transcriptions of Uralic languages.
The system records Uralic speech sounds. Examples appear in 1901; Finnish linguist E. N. Setälä published an early description in 1902.
Is ₚ the same as a formatted p?
No. ₚ is a separate character. Lowering ordinary p with formatting changes its appearance, not the underlying text; use that styling when the position is purely visual.
