What p means
It is p in a fullwidth form. Read it as the same letter; the wider form is a layout choice, not a different sound.
Japanese character sets such as JIS C 6226 included Latin letters in a 94-by-94 grid alongside CJK characters. The 1978 standard let those letters occupy a full character cell, while older single-byte text kept them narrow. Unicode retained both forms to support conversion with older mixed-width encodings.
In early-2010s vaporwave typography, repeated fullwidth letters became a retro-digital styling choice. The fullwidth name describes a layout role; the font and text layout determine how wide the character actually looks.
How do I type p?
Use fullwidth alphanumeric conversion in a Japanese IME. Type p with Japanese input active, then select the fullwidth alphanumeric candidate.
A 2025 guide describes F9 converting the current Latin input to fullwidth on Windows; on Mac, choose the fullwidth alphanumeric candidate. The exact menu depends on the input method.
Usually a layout choice; a run of fullwidth Latin letters can look deliberately styled.
A form that requires ordinary p may reject p.

2Why can a form reject p?
NFKC normalization maps p to p. A form may compare the original characters instead, or require ordinary ASCII p.
Is p just a font style?
No. It is a separate Unicode character. The font determines its drawn shape, while the character itself retains the fullwidth form.
