What ᵗ means
In UPA notation, ᵗ marks a very short t-like sound. The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet is a transcription system for describing how Uralic languages sound. Its raised position belongs to that phonetic notation, not to a general small-font style.
UPA examples appear in sources from 1901 and 1977, showing that the system predates Unicode by decades. In this notation, superscript placement has a specific job: marking very short sounds.
Unicode encodes ᵗ as a spacing modifier letter: it occupies its own position instead of attaching to the previous letter like a combining mark. Its raised form does not carry one universal meaning outside a notation system such as UPA.
How do I type ᵗ?
On the documented Windows UPA layout, press AltGr T. That key assignment belongs to that layout; other keyboard layouts may differ.
NFKC is a text-normalization process. Under NFKC, ᵗ turns into t; the raised distinction disappears.
Its clearest reading is in specialist phonetic notation; the raised shape alone has no single guaranteed meaning.
Don't read every raised t as a phonetic mark; the very-short-sound value is specific to UPA.

Questions people ask
1Is ᵗ a real superscript?
Yes. It is a separately encoded spacing modifier letter with a phonetic role, not ordinary t with a superscript style applied.
