What ⱽ means
ⱽ marks a very short sound in UPA/FUT transcription. UPA is the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet, a scholarly system for writing sounds in Uralic languages. FUT means Finno-Ugric transcription, a related tradition. The key used with a particular text gives ⱽ its exact value.
The shared transcription tradition took shape through proposals to write Uralic language sounds consistently. E. N. Setälä’s 1901 proposal for Finno-Ugric transcription is an early milestone; ⱽ was accepted as a UPA addition in 2006. The latter is its Unicode encoding date, not the sign’s origin.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a separate system; ⱽ is associated with UPA/FUT and has no universal IPA value.
How do I type ⱽ?
Use Unicode hexadecimal entry; there is no dedicated key. As of 2026, documented routes include Word/Outlook: type 2C7D, then AltX; GNOME/GTK: press CtrlShiftU, type 2c7d, then Space or Enter; macOS: enable Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type 2C7D.
If an app does not offer hexadecimal entry, use its character viewer.
Why does ⱽ look different in fonts?
Font support determines whether the shape displays clearly. Unicode treats superscript, small-capital, and subscript forms as meaningful distinctions in phonetic writing. A font without ⱽ may show a box, while limited phonetic-font coverage can make raised and baseline forms look alike.
Technical and niche: ⱽ signals specialist UPA/FUT-style transcription.
It has no universal IPA reading.

2Questions people ask
1Why does ⱽ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Latin Extended-C block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
