What 𐞣 means
It adds an ɶ-like quality to nearby sounds in transcription.
The IPA small-capital O-E sign ɶ represents an open front rounded vowel: the tongue is toward the front of the mouth and the lips are rounded. Here 𐞣 is a superscript modifier, not the main vowel. It can also mark a weak, fleeting ɶ.
Where did superscript ɶ come from?
A 2006 phonetic-font document records this modifier.
The IPA vowel chart places ɶ as the rounded counterpart of open-front [a]. Its usual value is an open front rounded vowel, though some descriptions instead treat it as a near-open rounded counterpart of [æ].
Charis SIL's phonetic-font documentation maps a modifier-small-capital-OE glyph to a private-use slot, a font-specific code point outside Unicode's standard assignments.
How do I type the exact modifier?
Use an IPA picker or a dedicated phonetic keyboard.
IPA resources point users to phonetic keyboards and character pickers for specialist symbols. Select 𐞣 itself; rich-text superscript formatting only changes appearance.
As of 2026-10-09, font design affects how it displays; an unsupported font may show a fallback or missing box. Older IPA fonts may map a similar glyph to a private-use code point, which is not the same Unicode character.
Specialist phonetic register; in casual chat it looks like pasted notation, not a tone marker.
Do not use it for the standalone IPA vowel ɶ.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𐞣 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
