Modifier Letter Small Closed Omega

36/57

𐞤 is a superscript closed omega: a phonetic modifier for a weak or fleeting sound colored by the older vowel ɷ, not a full vowel by itself. In English dialect notes, it marks an offglide, a fleeting vowel, or an echo-like sound. The full-size ɷ was replaced by ʊ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) at the 1989 Kiel Convention; a missing-glyph box means the font cannot display 𐞤.

What 𐞤 means

It marks a light ɷ-like sound attached to nearby phonetic material. In phonetic transcription, 𐞤 is the superscript form of ɷ, an older IPA symbol for a vowel made with the tongue raised toward the back of the mouth and the lips rounded. It can mark a weak or fleeting vowel, or an echo of that sound; read it as a modifier, not a full vowel.

Superscripts record a secondary or incomplete sound without giving it full-vowel status. The full-size ɷ was replaced by ʊ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) at the 1989 Kiel Convention. The superscript continued in some English dialect transcription for offglides (movement out of a vowel), diphthong parts (two vowel sounds within one syllable), and excrescent vowels (extra vowel-like sounds).

Examples appear in Penhallurick’s map-based atlas of English dialects (1987) and Anderson’s study of English varieties spoken in Wales (1991). Those publications show the superscript in use by then; they do not mark its beginning.

Why does 𐞤 show as a box?

A missing-glyph box usually means your font lacks 𐞤. Unicode text can be correct while an app shows a square, question-mark box, or blank space. Check that the font used by the app supports this character.

Specialist phonetic notation, especially in historical or dialect transcription; it is not a full-size vowel.

Use ʊ for the modern standalone vowel; 𐞤 is a modifier.

Can I use ʊ instead of 𐞤?

Usually no. ʊ is the full vowel symbol, while 𐞤 marks a secondary or reduced sound. Follow the notation used by the transcription you are reading.
