Modifier Letter Small Dz Digraph With Curl

9/57

To enter 𐞉, use U10789 in a Unicode picker or an IPA keyboard that includes it. The glyph is a small IPA modifier based on older ʥ, a one-piece symbol for a voiced affricate made near the tooth ridge and hard palate. The sound begins with blocked airflow, then releases into a voiced hiss; full-size IPA transcription commonly writes it d͡ʑ.

What 𐞉 means

Enter U10789 in a Unicode character picker.

An IPA keyboard may also contain this superscript ʥ modifier; confirm that it yields 𐞉, not ʥ or d͡ʑ.

What does 𐞉 mean?

It is a superscript modifier based on the older IPA character ʥ. The full-size ʥ is a ligature, a one-piece sign made from joined letters; it represented a voiced alveolo-palatal affricate: one consonant that starts with a brief closure and releases into a voiced hiss near the ridge behind the upper teeth and the hard palate.

By 1926, IPA charts showed affricate ligatures alongside tie-bar notation. In 2020, a Unicode proposal requested fuller modifier support for IPA letters and mapped 𐞉 to a superscript form of ʥ. In the IPA’s 2026 chart, two symbols joined by a tie bar are an available way to write an affricate; d͡ʑ joins d and ʑ as one consonant.

As a raised modifier, 𐞉 can mark that affricate as a secondary or lightly articulated element; the transcription convention determines the exact reading.

Why does 𐞉 show as a box?

A blank box usually means the font cannot display 𐞉.

A font can support ʥ yet lack 𐞉 because they are separate characters in different Unicode blocks. Use a font that covers the modifier's block.

Specialist phonetic notation; it signals a transcription context.

In ordinary prose, it reads like an unexplained phonetic fragment; use it where superscript notation is intended.
