modifier letter small dz digraph

Modifier Letter Small Dz Digraph

7/57

𐞇 marks a weak, fleeting, or inserted [d͡z] sound in phonetic transcription—the use of symbols to write speech sounds. This affricate is one consonant that starts like d and releases into z; the raised form marks it as secondary or transitional. 𐞇 is its own spacing character, not superscript styling.

Text symbol

What 𐞇 means

It marks a weak, fleeting, or inserted [d͡z] sound. In phonetic notation, [d͡z] is one consonant: it starts with a d-like closure and releases into z. The raised mark treats it as secondary or transitional rather than a full segment.

The phonetic idea predates Unicode. The 1926 IPA chart has related affricate ligatures; its 1947 chart lists ƾ and ƻ as alternatives for ts and dz, and the 1949 Principles list ʣ among ligatures. Those joined forms distinguish an affricate—one consonant—from separate t and s, or d and z.

Is 𐞇 the same as ʣ or d͡z?

No: 𐞇 is raised and reduced; ʣ is a full-size ligature. 𐞇 marks a lighter dz sound, while ʣ writes the full dz affricate. The forms d͡z and d͜z write that full affricate with a tie bar.

In 1989, the IPA retired full-size affricate ligatures in favor of tie-bar notation. A transcription system can still use 𐞇 for a secondary dz element. The related modifiers 𐞈, 𐞉, and 𐞊 alter the affricate’s place or quality; they are distinct characters.

How should I type 𐞇?

Use Unicode input or an HTML character reference. In an editor with Unicode-by-code-point input, enter hexadecimal 10787; the shortcut depends on the editor and operating system. In HTML, use 𐞇.

𐞇 is a spacing modifier letter, so it remains its own character rather than combining with a neighbor. Superscript formatting on ʣ changes appearance only; it does not create 𐞇.

Specialist phonetic transcription; outside it, 𐞇 reads as a technical token.

Superscript styling on ordinary text does not make 𐞇.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐞇 show as a box?

A font may not include this character. A font with the needed glyph can display it; superscript styling will not fill that gap.
