What ᶤ means
It signals that ɨ is subordinate to a stronger sound.
In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), ɨ is made with the tongue high and centered, lips unrounded. ᶤ can mark a short slide into or out of a two-part vowel, or a weak vowel beside stronger consonants. Some Americanist transcriptions use it; IPA notation may write both parts in full or join them with a tie mark.
The IPA chart replaced ï with ɨ in 1921. Printed examples of ᶤ appear in 1994 and 2001.
Specialist notation for a secondary or brief vowel.
Do not shrink an ordinary i; the raised position marks phonetic role.

2Questions people ask
1Why does ᶤ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Phonetic Extensions Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
