What 𐞂 means
It measures the raised detail, not the main sound. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a system for writing speech sounds. Its ordinary-height ˑ marks half length. After raised ʰ (aspiration, a consonant’s puff of air), 𐞂 makes that puff half-long.
The half-length mark appears in IPA notes by 1904.
The IPA’s English booklet from 1904 places ordinary-height ˑ beside the full-length mark in its timing notes. The raised form handles a finer distinction: duration can belong to a modifier, such as aspiration, rather than to the main consonant.
Specialist phonetic notation.
Unicode’s compatibility normalization, NFKC, changes it to ordinary-height `ˑ`.
