What ᠰ means
The Mongolian s sound is like s in “sun.” Before the Mongolian vowel transcribed as i (roughly “ee”), it can sound closer to “sh” in “shoe.”
Around the beginning of the thirteenth century, Mongols adapted Old Uyghur writing, based on the Sogdian script, for Mongolian. The vertical script appears in manuscripts, Buddhist teachings, legal and historical texts, literature, and official records. Todo and Manchu scripts later adapted it; Sibe followed Manchu writing.
Mongolia replaced traditional writing with Cyrillic in the early 1940s, then revived it alongside Cyrillic in the early 1990s. Reform efforts in Inner Mongolia during 1954–1980 did not displace the traditional script.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᠰ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Mongolian block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

ᠰ\1830Why is ᠰ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
