mongolian letter ue

Mongolian Letter Ue

32/157

Use a Mongolian-script keyboard to type ᠦ; on Microsoft's Mongolian (Mongolian Script) keyboard, it is on U. It is a vowel in traditional Mongolian writing, not a chat reaction. In words, its joined shape depends on position and neighboring letters, and vowel harmony affects suffix choices. The vertical script was adapted from Old Uyghur, though accounts differ on when.

What ᠦ means

Use a Mongolian-script keyboard. Microsoft's Mongolian (Mongolian Script) keyboard puts ᠦ on U. In a complete word, this letter may look different from the isolated sample because its position and neighboring letters shape its joined form. A font without Mongolian script shaping can show the wrong form.

When the context does not determine a particular form, the written sequence can include an invisible Mongolian free variation selector after the letter. These selectors request a specific glyph form. Preserve the supplied sequence instead of guessing.

What is ᠦ?

It marks a vowel in traditional Mongolian writing. Latin transliterations include ue and ü; Mongolian written in Cyrillic uses ү for the corresponding vowel. The exact pronunciation depends on the language and transcription system.

In native Mongolian words, ᠦ belongs to a group in vowel harmony. That group affects which vowels and suffix forms can follow, and the shape of some consonants.

Traditional Mongolian script was adapted from Old Uyghur. One account dates the adaptation to the early 13th century, as the expanding Mongol state needed writing for administration; another traces the shared Uyghur–Mongol borrowing through Sogdian to around the 5th century. The oldest surviving Mongolian-script text is the Yesünge stele, a stone inscription dated 1225. Later scripts related to this writing tradition include Todo, Manchu, and Sibe.

What if someone sends ᠦ alone?

Treat it as a letter sample, not a reaction. Alone, ᠦ may be a character sample or a fragment of a word; without the surrounding Mongolian letters, it does not form a complete word.

In vertical Mongolian writing, letters join and change shape by position. Some joined forms of ᠦ and the Mongolian letter ᠥ look identical, so a screenshot may not show which vowel is encoded.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᠦ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
