What ⊍ means
It is a multiplication operation for collections that track repeated items.
A multiset records how many times each item occurs: two copies of an item count differently from one. The idea predates the modern term: mathematician Richard Dedekind’s 1888 work is an early reference in multiset history, and formal theories followed.
In database theory, the same distinction is called bag semantics: a query can return duplicate rows, and their count remains part of the result. As a specialized operator, ⊍ signals a formal mathematics or computing context.
