Old Italic Letter Eks

24/39

The Old Italic X, 𐌗, usually stands for a k sound followed by s; some archaic Etruscan inscriptions at Caere and Veii use the same sign for s alone. It comes from a western Greek alphabet used in southern Italy. Later Etruscan writing dropped it, while Oscan, Umbrian, and Faliscan writing kept it.

What 𐌗 means

No; its sound depends on the script and period.

In Old Italic, 𐌗 represents /ks/: a k sound followed by s, like the last two sounds in box. In archaic Etruscan inscriptions at Caere and Veii, the X-shaped sign could instead represent /s/ alone.

Greek settlers brought alphabetic writing to Italy in the 8th century BCE, including through colonies on Ischia and at Cumae. Etruscans adapted a western Greek alphabet for their language and nearby communities. The earliest Etruscan inscriptions date to around 700 BCE; that dates the script, not this particular sign's first appearance.

Why did later Etruscan writing drop 𐌗?

Later Etruscan writing dropped it; neighboring scripts kept it.

The archaic Etruscan alphabet was used from the 7th–5th centuries BCE. Its later Neo-Etruscan form, used from the 4th–1st centuries BCE, left 𐌗 out. Oscan, Umbrian, and Faliscan writing retained the sign.

Why does 𐌗 change shape in different fonts?

Unicode groups several related local alphabets under Old Italic, and their shared letters can have different shapes by language. A font designed for the specific script can match an inscription more closely.

Why do Etruscan texts read right to left?

Unicode displays Old Italic left-to-right by default. Most Etruscan inscriptions from the 7th–6th centuries BCE ran right-to-left, so a digital edition may need its text direction set explicitly.

Why is 𐌗 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
