Phags-pa Single Head Mark

53/56

꡴ is a Phags-pa punctuation mark that opens a passage; it marks the text that follows, not a spoken sound. In Tibetan-style Phags-pa, the single head mark can also start a continuation column. It is a specialized text marker, not a general chat reaction.

Text symbol

What ꡴ means

It marks where a Phags-pa passage begins.

It is not pronounced as part of a syllable. In Tibetan-style Phags-pa, it may stand before a shad, a mark that closes a clause or section. Most Phags-pa texts used no punctuation, so ꡴ is not a universal feature of the script.

Where did the single head mark come from?

It belongs to a Tibetan punctuation tradition within a Mongol imperial script.

At Khubilai Khan's request, the Tibetan lama Phags-pa devised the script for Mongolian, Chinese, and other languages under Mongol rule; it was promulgated in 1269. The script appeared on edicts, monuments, seals, books, and other artifacts before declining outside Tibet after the Yuan dynasty.

A Unicode review from 2004 describes head marks as Tibetan additions found mostly in 19th- and 20th-century Tibetan Phags-pa texts. In one calligraphy page, the double form ꡵ opens the first column while ꡴ starts a continuation column.

Should you send ꡴ by itself?

Only if the recipient expects a script or typography reference.

Alone in ordinary chat, it is not a complete conversational message. A lone mark is best read as a Phags-pa sample or a formatting reference, not an expression of feeling; add words if the context is unclear.

Specialist and typographic; it marks text structure, not a feeling.

Alone in chat, it may look accidental; label it if the reader may not know Phags-pa.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꡴ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Phags-pa block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
