🪧

placard

Placard

8/9

🪧 is a sign on a stick, the kind people hold up at a protest, a strike or a march. In messages it often means protest, support for a cause or "I'm making a statement here", but it also works as a plain notice or announcement. The words next to it decide which.

What 🪧 means

A handheld protest sign: a board on a stick. On most phones the board is blank or carries a scribble, so the emoji stands for the act of holding up a sign rather than any particular slogan. It is the emoji equivalent of a picket sign at a strike or a placard at a demonstration.

People reach for it when they are talking about protests, strikes, marches, petitions, elections and activism of every kind: "see you at the rally 🪧", "union meeting Friday 🪧". It also serves for literal signs of other sorts, such as a "for sale" board, a shop notice or a directional sign, and for announcements generally, because a sign is simply a message held up for everyone to see.

What does it mean when someone sends 🪧?

They are putting their words on a sign for you. Next to a political or social statement it says "I stand behind this": protest, solidarity, or a call to join. Next to something trivial ("bring back the old menu 🪧") it is a joke, turning a small gripe into a one-person demonstration. Next to a date, a price or a reminder it is just a notice board: "look here".

On its own, with no words, it is ambiguous. Many readers think of protest or activism first, so if you only mean "announcement", say so in the message. If someone sends it after news of a strike or a march, it usually reads as support, and the words around it tell you whether they're going too.

Declarative and public. Earnest when the cause is real, playful when the gripe is small; rarely intimate.

A lone 🪧 reads as protest to many people; add words if you only mean a notice.

Worth knowing

  • It was proposed as a classic picket sign, filling a gap: emoji already had a raised fist, a peace symbol and a loudspeaker, but nothing to hold up at a demonstration.
  • The word comes from French, where "placard" meant a posted notice. In French today it is also the everyday word for a built-in cupboard, and the French call this emoji a pancarte.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 🪧 have a peace sign on it on WhatsApp?

It's part of the artwork. As of 2026 WhatsApp draws a peace sign on the board where many other platforms leave it blank or scribbled; the sender didn't choose it and may not even see it.

Is 🪧 political?

Often, but not always. It shows the sign, not the slogan. Beside a cause it means protest or support; beside a sale, a reminder or a joke it is just a notice board.
