What 🖓 means
It means disapproval, rejection, or “no.” Turning the hand around changes the drawing, not its negative reading. As a deliberate reaction, it can mean dislike or refusal; 👎 is easier to recognize.
The earliest documented digital use of this design is in the Wingdings font family. Microsoft dates the Wingdings designs to 1990 and 1991 and their release as Wingdings to 1992; a Wingdings 2 map assigns this sign to the = key. Those fonts supplied document and computer-interface icons, so this began as a typographic sign before its Unicode life.
Why can the reversed thumbs-down look like a broken emoji?
Its appearance depends on the font. Unicode does not recommend emoji presentation for 🖓, so fonts draw it in their own monochrome styles rather than standard emoji artwork. Changing fonts can change its appearance without changing the character.
Niche, informal, and visually technical; it can look like a stray font icon instead of deliberate disapproval.
For a formal or unfamiliar audience, spell out the rejection.
