What 🅊 means

It tags a high-definition TV service.

ARIB (the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses), Japan’s broadcast-industry standards group, includes it as a compact HDTV label in its digital-broadcast symbol set.

A 2007 Unicode proposal lists the mark as ARIB code 9048 for HDTV; a 2008 proposal says the Japanese broadcast symbols were already in use on television.

Why does 🅊 become plain HV?

Compatibility normalization removes the box.

Unicode’s NFKC form—compatibility normalization—replaces this squared character with the plain letters HV. Software that normalizes text can keep the letters while dropping the HDTV label’s special form.
