What ₇ means

After an element in a chemical formula, it gives the number of atoms of that element. After a variable in an index, it can identify a particular member, position, or state.

The English word “subscript” is recorded from 1704; that dates the word, not this character. In the early 19th century, Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius used raised numbers to show element ratios, so a number’s position carried meaning even when it sat above the line.

Compact and technical; it reads as notation, not decoration.

For multi-character or nested math, use real formatting; ₇ represents only one digit.
