symbol for marks chapter

Mark's Chapter Sign

🕅 is a Church Slavonic mark for a Chapter of Mark, directing readers to notes on difficult passages in the Orthodox Typikon. In a service book, it flags instructions for feasts that overlap with Sundays or other observances. In casual chat, treat it as specialist book typography and ask for context.

What 🕅 means

It points to Monk Mark's notes on difficult Typikon passages. The Typikon is the Orthodox rulebook for arranging worship; a Chapter of Mark is one set of explanatory comments.

The tradition is tied to the Lavra of St. Sabbas, an Orthodox monastery. The comments were first compiled in the tenth century and attributed to Monk Mark, possibly Bishop Mark of Hydruntum.

The sign sits in the margin beside service instructions, especially when a feast falls on Sunday or overlaps another major observance. Older Russian forms combine Cyrillic М with parts of Марко above or below it; forms associated with Patriarch Nikon commonly use М and р, while some editions box the full name. The comments received a final revision in the fourteenth century, when the Russian Church adopted the Sabbaite Typikon.

What does it mean when someone sends 🕅?

By itself, it has no standard chat-reaction meaning.

In a Church Slavonic scan, it points to the same liturgical notes. In ordinary chat, a specialist may be naming the tradition; another recipient may see only an unfamiliar text character.

Ask which book or passage the sender means before reading emotion into it. It is not a general marker for a chapter, a note, or a religious reaction.

Why does 🕅 look different in different fonts?

The character stays the same; the font can change its outline.

Church Slavonic fonts may offer alternate outlines through OpenType or Graphite, font features that select different letter shapes. The Ponomar typeface supports such alternatives.

A font without suitable coverage may show a missing-character box, a fallback shape, or only the default outline. For the historical form, use a Unicode font with Church Slavonic support.

Specialist liturgical typography; in casual chat it is obscure rather than expressive.

If it arrives alone, ask for the book or passage before guessing at a reaction.

Why does 🕅 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
