What 🖏 means
It means “OK,” approval, or agreement.
Read the OK sign as the familiar hand gesture for “all good” or “I agree.” If someone sends it alone, a brief “Got it” fits without guessing beyond the approval.
A font supplies the drawing, so a device without a supporting font may show a missing-glyph box instead of a hand. That changes what the recipient sees, not the basic OK reading.
Why is 🖏 tied to Wingdings?
It was encoded from a hand in a symbol font.
Its font trail runs through Lucida Icons, Arrows, and Stars, companion icon sets made for Lucida text and later released in reorganized form as Microsoft Wingdings. They supplied hands, tools, computer hardware, interface marks, and other small illustrations for documents.
Recording it as a Unicode character removed the need for Wingdings’ character mapping: documents could identify the hand without relying on that font. A font is still needed to draw the character.
Neutral and approving, with a technical feel from its Wingdings history.
A recipient may see a box if their font lacks the hand.

1Why does 🖏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
