What 𐄩 means
It marks one additive value: 8,000.
The Aegean whole-number signs are traced to Linear A, a Bronze Age script used on Crete. Linear A is attested from Middle Minoan IIA by the end of the nineteenth century BCE; its written language remains unidentified as of 2026. Cretan Hieroglyphic was a separate Cretan script from an overlapping period.
The Minoan bookkeeping signs are additive: each contributes its own value, and they are written largest to smallest. They record commodities, quantities, and measures on clay tablets and sealings—clay impressions used in recordkeeping. Linear B adapted this writing tradition to record early Greek; its records use units of weight and capacity where Linear A uses fractions. A related Cypriot system preserves at least the lower numeral signs.
Why does 𐄩 show as a box?
Your font or app cannot draw its glyph.
Unicode identifies the character, but the font draws its visible form. If the active font lacks this rare sign, fallback may show a box, a box with a question mark, or blank space. Fonts can draw different outlines without changing the value.
UTF-16 represents this supplementary-plane character with a surrogate pair: two 16-bit code units. Software that counts those units instead of Unicode characters can split or miscount it.
Historical, specialist notation: use it when transcribing or discussing Aegean numbers, not as ordinary number punctuation.
It is a historical text numeral, not an emoji; a box or blank means your font cannot draw it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𐄩 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Aegean Numbers block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
