What 𑜉 means
It is a consonant base, not a word with one fixed translation. In the Ahom writing system, 𑜉 supplies /m/ with an inherent /a/, so on its own it is read roughly ma. A vowel sign, medial, or visible killer changes the syllable.
In manuscript reading, ma can mean “horse,” “dog,” “come,” or “shoulder”; in compounds it can mean “fruit.” The surrounding word and passage determine which reading fits.
Why can the same letter translate several ways?
The spelling leaves sound distinctions for context to resolve. Tai Ahom had tones, but traditional spelling did not mark them and did not distinguish every vowel contrast. One written syllable can therefore fit several pronunciations and meanings.
Experienced manuscript readers use surrounding words and knowledge of related Tai languages. A single fixed gloss for 𑜉 would miss those distinctions.
How has Ahom letter ma been used?
It belongs to a long writing tradition. The oldest surviving Ahom text is the Snake Pillar inscription, from King Siuw Hum Miung’s reign (1497–1539). The script appears on stones, coins, brass plates, and manuscripts. A British Library catalogue lists an Ahom-script Buranji—a chronicle—dated 1754–1815, containing a prayer and a history of royal succession.
The script was used to write Tai Ahom. After the language’s use declined in the late 17th century, priests kept the language and script in religious practice through the 19th century; revival publishing is conventionally dated from 1920. Script histories place Ahom in a Mon–Burmese to Lik-Tai line, alongside related Tai Le and Khamti traditions.

If the recipient cannot read Ahom, include a transliteration or the whole word.

2Why can 𑜉 mean horse, dog, or come?
It can. Traditional spelling leaves some sound distinctions unmarked, so manuscript context can resolve the same written syllable as different words.
Why does 𑜉 show as a box?
The active font lacks an Ahom glyph. A font with Ahom coverage can display it; the box is a rendering problem.
