ahom letter ttha

Ahom letter ttha

61/65

𑝂 is the Ahom letter ttha, a breathy retroflex “t”—a t made with the tongue curled slightly back. It serves specialist Pāḷi writing in Ahom. Its vowel signs may follow it in stored text even when a font draws one before it.

What 𑝂 means

It represents a breathy, tongue-curled “t” in specialist Pāḷi writing. The Pāḷi ttha is listed in orthography notes checked 26 April 2026 as an additional letter for the Tipiṭaka, a Buddhist scripture collection, rather than ordinary Ahom spelling.

The earliest surviving Ahom inscription named in Unicode’s script description is the Snake Pillar, made for King Siuw Hum Miung (1497–1539). Ahom belongs to the Lik Tai branch of Tai writing systems, alongside the Tai Le and Khamti scripts. A Unicode proposal suggests a possible connection with similar stone inscriptions at Mau Long in Yunnan, China; it presents that link as tentative.

Ahom writing appears on stone inscriptions, coins and brass plates, and in manuscripts containing chronicles, divination and omen-reading, Buddhist works, and ritual texts. As Tai Ahom declined and Assamese took over everyday writing, priests preserved Ahom for religious practice. Later dictionaries, primers and computer fonts supported its revival.

How do I type Ahom letter ttha?

Use an Ahom-capable Unicode input method and font.

Enter the consonant base first, then its vowel signs or the visible killer, which marks a final consonant. Some vowel signs appear before or around the base on screen while following it in stored text.

A 2020 proposal for these additional Ahom letters noted that fonts covering them were not widely available then. If the glyph appears as a box or blank, the font may lack Ahom coverage or shaping; try an Ahom-capable font.

Specialist and textual: its narrow Pāḷi role is a clue to the passage, not a conversational tone.

Don’t replace it with 𑜌: the two letters represent different consonants.

Why does 𑝂 show as a square or blank?

It can. A font without Ahom coverage, or with incomplete shaping, may display a box or blank. Choose a font that supports Ahom; the stored character itself is unchanged.
