ahom vowel sign e

Ahom Vowel Sign E

37/65

𑜦 is the Ahom e sign for the short e vowel in a syllable. Ahom writing used it in Tai Ahom spellings, including court and ritual texts. Text stores it after a consonant even though shaping draws it to the left.

What 𑜦 means

It marks the short e vowel in an Ahom syllable. Use it with an Ahom consonant or consonant cluster. With the Ahom consonant 𑜀, it forms a syllable. An initial vowel uses a standalone carrier letter followed by its vowel sign.

Ahom stores this pre-base vowel sign after the base consonant or cluster, but script shaping draws it to their left. That is normal spelling, not a typo. The sign can also join other vowel signs; in a composite vowel, its components follow Ahom’s prescribed text order.

How old is the Ahom writing tradition?

Its oldest surviving text dates to 1497–1539. The Snake Pillar inscription is that text, from King Siuw Hum Miung’s reign. A 2019 study identifies it and coins from 1539–1552 as the earliest dated Ahom examples, and reports no earlier dated inscription or manuscript.

Ahom script was built to write Tai Ahom, the language of a kingdom in Assam. It served court and ritual writing. The wider Lik Tai tradition supported vernacular writing; accounts connect it with Burmese-influenced writing in Moeng Maw and place its development between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries.

What changed as spoken Ahom declined?

The script continued in ritual use after everyday speech declined. Spoken use of Tai Ahom declined after the court shifted toward Hinduism, but traditional priests used the language and script for religious practice through the nineteenth century. Manuscripts preserve chronicles, dictionaries, calendars, rituals, astrology, stories, omens, and divination.

Modern use of the script is considered to have begun with an Ahom-Assamese-English dictionary in 1920. Later dictionaries, primers, books, teaching, and computer fonts carried it into modern publication.

A functional mark within Ahom spelling; treat it as part of the written syllable.

A position left of the consonant is correct Ahom shaping.

Drift: As of 2026, Ahom writing continues through teaching, ritual use, manuscripts, books, and digital text. (as of as of 2026)
