Arabic Mathematical Initial Jeem

It follows the older Arabic letter sequence, called abjad. The letter-name order runs alef, beh, jeem, dal; modern Arabic dictionaries generally sort differently, with teh after beh.

The wider Arabic mathematical alphabet has a centuries-long manuscript and print history. A 2010 Unicode proposal describes forms used in manuscripts, books about inscriptions, manuals, and traditional printed editions. Separately, a manuscript from Jerba, Tunisia, written in the late 18th century, preserves a mature Maghrebi algebraic notation system.
